After the capsule was deemed unsafe to return to the astronauts, Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, launched a replacement vehicle on February 23. In December, a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that had been used to transport two cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut to the space station sprang a coolant leak. The mission comes as the astronauts currently on the ISS have been grappling with a separate transportation issue. They’re expected to spend up to six months on board the orbiting laboratory, carrying out science experiments and maintaining the two-decade-old station. Once Bowen, Hoburg, Fedyaev, and Alneyadi are on board the ISS, they’ll work to take over operations from the SpaceX Crew-5 astronauts who arrived at the space station in October 2022. The Crew-6 team that will launch on the SpaceX capsule includes NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen, a veteran of three space shuttle missions, and first-time flier Warren Hoburg, as well as Sultan Alneyadi, who will be the second astronaut from the UAE ever to travel to space, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. This mission is expected to mark the seventh astronaut flight SpaceX has carried out on NASA’s behalf since 2020. But the clock was stopped by engineers that oversee the ground systems with less than three minutes left. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule were slated to lift off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 1:45 a.m. “Human spaceflight is an inherently risky endeavor, and, as always, we will fly when we are ready.” and transform it into public wonder and goodwill.“I’m proud of the NASA and SpaceX teams’ focus and dedication to keeping Crew-6 safe,” NASA’s Administrator Bill Nelson said in a blog post. For the moment, though, the service is a nice, thoughtful feature: a way to take work that NASA is already doing. (I chose both, because why not.) We'll see how well it works. So as early as 2031, the space station could be guided to a fiery. And it allowed me to clarify whether I preferred to learn about morning or evening sighting opportunities. On January 31, 2022, NASA announced that the Biden-Harris administration had extended the space station’s operations until 2030. For Washington, D.C., Spot the Station offered location options down to the neighborhood level. (So "don't worry," NASA says, "if there are big gaps in between sightings!")īeing, for better or for worse, pretty much the target demographic for this particular service, I just signed up for it. "This service will only notify you of 'good' sighting opportunities, NASA says - "sightings that are high enough in the sky (40 degrees or more) and last long enough to give you the best view of the orbiting laboratory." That viewing opportunity could come as often as once or twice a week or as rarely as once or twice a month, depending on the Earth's rotation and on sky clarity. Spot the Station lets you sign up for email or text-message alerts that will let you know, a few hours beforehand, when the ISS will be passing over your area. and sending it, in fact, directly to you. ![]() Several times a week, Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston determines sighting opportunities for 4,600 terrestrial locations worldwide - places from which the space station is visible for a long distance. ![]() You know who always knows where the ISS is, though? NASA. Since the Earth spins as the ISS orbits it, the station's position in the sky at any given moment - relative to a position on land - is hard to know for sure. If you know where to look for it, you can easily see it - no telescope required. But: if you know where to look for it. The International Space Station is, after the sun and the moon, the third brightest object in the sky. As seen from Tübingen, the passage took about 4 minutes. This composite of 70 exposures shows the trail of the ISS (with gaps between exposures) as it moved left to right over the city of Tübingen in southern Germany on February 7, 2008. ![]()
